Welcome to Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara is often described as the city that started the modern environmental movement. It held one of the first two Earth Day celebrations, back in 1970, a year after an enormous offshore oil spill blackened area beaches and devastated marine life. Today, the small city by the sea remains vigilant in working to limit growth, cut carbon, clean up polluted creeks and beaches, restore native landscapes and support such endangered creatures as the oceangoing steelhead trout, which spawns in local rivers.
