Welcome to New Orleans

More than two years after Katrina, New Orleans still has the soul of a city that won’t be stopped. Now, added to the city's many enduring legacies, is an interest in environmental sustainability that was never there before. Brad Pitt’s “Make It Right” project, which is building sustainable homes in the hard-hit 9th Ward, and “Rebuild Green,” also in the 9th, have generated a good deal of media attention, while businesses like “Green Project” sell salvaged high-quality building materials to the community at low cost. Meanwhile, the nonprofit organization Historic Green has set itself the goal of making the holy Cross and Lower 9th neighborhoods the nation’s first carbon-neutral community, by 2030.
